What Is the Motability Scheme?
The Motability Scheme is a UK government-backed programme that helps people with disabilities stay mobile and independent. It allows you to exchange your qualifying mobility allowance for a brand-new car, making driving simple, affordable, and worry-free.
Through the scheme, you lease a vehicle for three years (or five years for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles), with almost everything included in one regular payment directly from your mobility allowance.
How the Motability Scheme Works?

Who Is Eligible for the Motability Scheme?
You may qualify for the Motability Scheme if you receive one of the following allowances and have at least 12 months remaining on the award:
- Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA)
- Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
You don’t need to hold a driving licence yourself—parents, guardians, carers, or nominated drivers can drive on your behalf.
